Season Brent's Message
Artistic Director's Message PDF Print E-mail

For our 46th year I have programmed a season that highlights WCD within a national context.  The year begins with the PRAIRIE DANCE CIRCUIT, a showcase for some of the best dance artists from across the prairies. For WCD's part in this touring show I have chosen multi-media artist Andrew Milne to choreograph a new work on WCD dancers Johanna Riley and Sarah Roche.  I have already seen the results of Andrew's first three weeks in creation with the dancers and can't wait for you to see it.  The other artists contributing to this new initiative that will have our dancers performing in Edmonton, Calgary and Regina have been chosen by senior dance artists from each of these prairie cities.

Up next WCD will focus on home grown talent by showcasing the work of creators whose choreographic talents have blossomed in our very own prairie province. SHUFFLED will include a new work by our Founding Artistic Director Rachel Browne, a revised work by myself and a new to WCD piece by ex-pat Manitoban Lesandra Dodson whose work 'In Silence' wowed audiences across Canada last season.

Our third show of the season was the highlight of the recent Canada Dance Festival. CABANE  is the result of a trio led by dancer and choreographer and long time Winnipeg favourite Paul-André Fortier, visual artist/writer/performer/musician Rober Racine and filmmaker Robert Morin coming together for a compelling work that will surely astound you as it did me and the audiences in Ottawa.

WCD's final show of the season will see the long awaited return to Winnipeg of one of Canada's preeminent dance companies, Toronto Dance Theatre. TDT Artistic Director Christopher House's latest work, PTEROS TACTICS, has been described by the Globe and Mail as 'a piece that mesmerizes the eye while engaging the brain'.  If you have seen TDT you will understand when I say this is a performance not to miss.

I hope I have enticed you to join us for all four shows of this, our 46th season.  It's going to be fabulous and it just won't be the same without you.  So come, be moved and be here as we begin the countdown to our 50th year.
