The Rachel Browne Trust

The launch of The Rachel Browne Trust

LAUNCHING HER LEGACY

After the tragic passing of Rachel Browne at the Canada Dance Festival in Ottawa this summer many of us in the Canadian dance community were left reeling. Rachel was a true icon whose life and art had a huge impact on the scores of dancers, choreographers and students with whom she worked.  In honour of her incomparable contribution to dance in Canada it was decided to form The Rachel Browne Trust.  The Trust will be administered by Rachel’s daughters Ruth Asper, Miriam Browne & Annette Browne, with support from WCD, who will manage the Trust.  The purpose of the Trust will be to preserve and disseminate her legacy; the many dances she so carefully crafted.

We are asking you to consider participating alongside David and Ruth Asper’s Sensible Shoes Foundation with a gift for The Launch of The Rachel Browne Trust. Our fundraising goal is $200,000.  With the Sensible Shoes Foundation’s generous gift at the Leaders of the Trust level ($50,000), we are already a quarter of
the way there.  Donations to this campaign will receive a charitable tax receipt and all donors will be recognized.

With your support and the significant visibility of the national launch of The Rachel Browne Trust through the performances of Toward Light - A Tribute to Rachel Browne, we will be off to a sustainable future preserving and disseminating Rachel’s gifts to us. Thank you for taking the time to consider this unique opportunity.

Donors will be acknowledged at their level of support in WCD’s show programs for this season, and permanently in the lobby of The Rachel Browne Theatre and on WCD’s website..  All donations will receive a charitable tax receipt from Winnipeg's Contemporary Dancers. (Cheques must be made out to WCD with RBT, or Rachel Browne Trust, in the memo line.)

Achieving our fundraising goal of $200,000 will allow WCD to launch the Rachel Browne Trust with performances that will showcase nationally why Rachel’s contribution to dance in Canada is so significant and highlight why preserving and disseminating her work for future generations of dancers is of such importance.

THE PERFORMANCE

In order to launch this Trust nationally we have programmed a tribute that showcases the depth and breadth of her significant body of work.

TOWARD LIGHT - A Tribute to Rachel Browne, will highlight a range of Rachel's work including a short excerpt from Odetta’s Songs and Dances (1964) to Rachel's most recent and very poignant work Momentum (2012).  As reflected in Rachel's latter works, dancers from all stages of their professional careers will perform the nine works/excerpts programmed.

After two January performances in Winnipeg at The Shaw Performing Arts Centre the tribute show for this icon of Canadian modern dance will travel to Toronto at the Fleck Dance Theatre and to Vancouver at the Scotiabank Dance Centre. (details below)

TOMORROW'S DANCERS

Because of Rachel’s very important work with emerging professionals, it was felt that the launch needed to include students.  The tribute will be performed by thirteen professional dancers and eight student dancers in Winnipeg and Vancouver, with a further four students participating in the Toronto performance.  The number of student dancers participating is a reflection of the interest by the professional training programs across Canada in programming Rachel’s dances.

Eight students from the Senior Professional Program of the School of Contemporary Dancers (which Rachel founded forty years ago) will perform Rachel’s delightful Willow Island in Winnipeg at the two Shaw Performing Arts Centre shows.  Following this, eight students from the Canadian Contemporary Dance Theatre will perform it in Toronto.  They will be joined by four graduating students from the School of Toronto Dance Theatre performing Rachel’s powerful KJ4. This show will take place at the Fleck Dance Theatre at Harbourfront Centre.  Finally eight students from The Victoria School of Contemporary Dance will perform Willow Island at the Scotia Dance Centre in Vancouver.

These students will be dancing alongside thirteen seasoned professionals from WCD and Winnipeg’s independent community for a tribute show that will be a truly fitting launch to The Rachel Browne Trust.

PILLARS OF THE TRUST

As the purpose of the Trust is to both preserve and disseminate Rachel’s dances it will be comprised of two supporting pillars.

Internationally recognized dance artist and former WCD dancer, Stephanie Ballard, will handle the archival work.  Already immersed in preserving the archives of Arnold Spohr and as the founder of the Winnipeg Dance Preservation Initiative, Stephanie is a natural fit for this pillar of the Trust.   The second pillar will have WCD dancer and Rachel’s most recent muse, Kristin Haight, overseeing the rehearsal direction.   This aspect of the Trust will be jumpstarted in the preparations for the launch with Kristin travelling toToronto and Victoria to rehearse the students; making sure their contribution to TOWARD LIGHT will be up to Rachel’s very high standards.
