Call for Dancers

We are thrilled to commission Guest Choreographer, Jera Wolfe, to create a new work for WCD!
WCD invites Winnipeg-based contemporary dancers who wish to be considered for this project to submit an expression of interest.
Interested artists are invited to submit the following, by email, by October 2, 2020:
– One 3-5 minute video link (no password please)
– 150 word bio
– One paragraph expressing why you are interested in working with Jera Wolfe
– One paragraph expressing why you are interested in working with WCD
– Your artistic resume (1-3 pages)
Please submit video link in the body of your email and all other information in one attached document. In fairness to all those who are interested, please submit only the requested items.
Your video link may include anything you wish to share as your expression of interest. This could be, but is not limited to, a recent performance, rehearsal footage, or something you are working on.
Recent footage is appreciated. Please include all appropriate credits and date of filming. This opportunity is open to established, mid-career, and emerging artists. This opportunity is not intended for student dancers.

About Jera Wolfe:
Born in Toronto, Canada, Dora winner Jera Wolfe is a choreographer and performer of Métis heritage and is an Associate Artist with Red Sky Performance.
Jera is the official Canadian choreographer for NBS’s Sharing Dance Day 2020 and the Ontario Ambassador for International Dance Day 2020.
His captivating choreography has awarded him the 2019 Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Original Choreography for Trace. He has demonstrated an impressive repertoire of works presented by Canadian Stage, Fall For Dance North, Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Festival des arts de Saint-Sauveur, Danse Danse, and Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival.
His recent works include Bare choreographed at Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Trace by Red Sky Performance, and Arise for Canada’s National Ballet School, Embers for Canadian Contemporary Dance Theatre, Willow for School of Contemporary Dancers, and Reliance for Ryerson University’s School of Performance. Jera graduated from Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet School and, since 2016, returned to the company to create new works each year. Aside from choreography, Jera has also performed in many dance performances including, Peggy Baker Dance Projects, who we are in the dark as part of the Holland Dance Festival.

Winnipeg’s Contemporary Dancers encompasses a place on the local and national arts landscape that enables intersections and linkages among dance creators, dance interpreters, and audiences. Our work gathers people together to appreciate, share, create, and contribute to the development of contemporary dance. Founded Rachel Browne in 1964, WCD is Canada’s oldest and longest running contemporary dance company.
Project Commitment:
Rehearsals November 09-27, 2020
Rehearsals are typically expected to run Monday thru Friday each week.
Typical schedule for November 09-27, 2020*:
10:00-11:15 Dancers’ class, provided by WCD
11:30-1:30 Rehearsal
2:30-4:30 Rehearsal continues
* please note that for November 11th, a later start and end time will be scheduled
Production week and performances:
November 30-December 06, 2020
Schedule to be confirmed closer to production week.
Project is anticipated to include live performances, online dissemination, and may include studio sharing during the creative process, live streaming, and/or other platforms or activities.
WCD has Covid-19 health and safety protocols in place. Dancers will be requested to agree to WCD’s protocols. These protocols will include daily screening, and will follow government recommendations, which may include physical distancing and mask wearing.
All dancers will be paid according to CADA West recommendations. Dancers will be paid hourly rates for all rehearsals and a flat fee for production week. Dancers’ class provided by WCD on all rehearsal days. Proposed schedule is subject to changes/revisions.
All submissions received by October 02, 2020, will be reviewed for consideration by Jera Wolfe and WCD.
